May Is Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Creating Sun-Safe Spaces with Outdoor Mirador

Every May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month reminds us how important it is to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the sun’s harmful rays. As the most common cancer in the world, skin cancer affects millions of people each year—more than all other cancers combined. The good news: it’s largely preventable, and small daily choices can make a big difference.

At Outdoor Mirador, we’re passionate about beautiful, functional outdoor living spaces—and about helping our community enjoy the outdoors safely. This month, we’re shining a light on prevention and how thoughtful shade from pergolas, patio umbrellas, and other structures can be a key part of a sun-safe lifestyle.

Why Skin Cancer Awareness Matters

Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70? According to leading organizations such as the Skin Cancer Foundation and the American Academy of Dermatology, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the leading cause—but with smart strategies like seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen, you can significantly lower your risk.[1][2]

The Science of Shade

UV exposure damages skin cells, accelerating aging and increasing cancer risk. Sunscreen is essential—but shade is your first line of defense. Seeking shade, especially during peak sun (10 am–4 pm), can substantially reduce UV exposure (often cited up to ~70%, depending on factors like density of shade, time of day, and surface reflection).[2]

Our pergolas and shade structures are engineered to maximize coverage and comfort. Whether hosting a backyard BBQ, relaxing poolside, or working from your patio, you can create spaces to make memories—while staying protected.

Designing a Sun-Safe Outdoor Oasis

  1. Prioritize overhead shade. Place a pergola or large umbrella over dining and seating. For customizable coverage, consider adjustable louvered roofs or retractable canopies. Position structures to shield high-traffic zones and sun-facing windows.
  2. Layer your protection. Add side panels, curtains, or trellises with greenery to block low-angle morning/afternoon sun. Choose UV-protective fabrics for cushions and décor.
  3. Think beyond shade. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to exposed skin (even in shade). Wear sun-protective clothing, wide-brim hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Plan outdoor time for early morning or late afternoon.
  4. Create cool retreats. Use misting fans, outdoor rugs, and plants to lower ambient temps. Make shaded zones inviting with comfortable seating and dining setups.
